Hi, I am an ASL student. My ASL partner and I need to do a Deaf skit on video for our ASL class. It needs to be about 4 or 5 minutes long. Our basic story plot is a female Deaf friend hanging out with a female hearing friend for the day, having some funny misunderstandings and other funny things happen. We have two basic jokes so far that need some ironing out but you can get the gist of it and I think they’re funny. I hope you do too. These jokes might take up about 2 minutes or so, and therefore we need about 2 or 3 more jokes to take up the rest the time.
First joke, you really have to visualize it (the rough idea):
Us two gal pals are going to lunch, shopping, a show, or something like that (depends on the rest of the jokes and we think of). We are walking down the street. I play the Deaf friend. I see a sign for a dance studio that says, “Dance Affair.” My mouth opens and I’m in shock. I sign ‘affair’ ‘affair.’ I’m a bit embarrassed and sign ‘sex’ and ‘two-people-lying-down..…you know.” My hearing friend explains it doesn’t mean that. I insist but there the sign is and it says, ‘affair.’ My friend explains it’s a different meaning.
That story was inspired by actual events between another student and her Deaf friend.
Second joke, this is the end of the video:
We are about to get in the car to go home. My hearing friend has to go to the bathroom first. I decide to go to the car and start it. I feel the vibrations from the radio and turn it up. I start rockin’ out and car dancing. Later my hearing friend comes in and looks at me funny and signs, “What are you doing?” I sign “I’m rockin’ out to the music.” She says “That’s not music, that’s static!” I pause, shrug my shoulders and just keep rockin’ out!
That story was inspired by a Deaf comedian.
