Manila Standard Today -- NBI to integrate deaf-mute to its ranks -- 2011/may/11

SOME agents of the National Bureau of Investigation will be trained on “sign language” following a plan to integrate deaf-mute persons into its work force apparently to reduce the incidence of corruption.

NBI director Magtanggol Gatdula said sign language will be included as a new course in the NBI so that there will be no communication barriers with the deaf mute who perform some sensitive jobs at the bureau.

Gatdula said they will be assigned to the NBI’s Automated Fingerprint Information System, where the records of the persons under investigation will automatically come out in “just one click.”

He said the deaf-mute will also be tasked to scan documents and other materials, while some will be assigned to the Cybersecurity Office.

In building up the capability of the bureau, the NBI chief said the deaf mute are fitted for these kinds of projects which delve on handling sensitive information, particularly the names of persons with cases.

Gatdula said the deaf-mute are hard to corrupt, a view shared by NBI Cyberspace Security head, retired Air Force Col. Danny Crisology.

Since it is very rare to see a deaf mute behind bars, Crisologo said the logical conclusion is that they are honest persons.
