Elmira Mayor John Tonello announced Monday that this week is National Deaf Awareness Week in Elmira.
The objective of the week is to help differentiate between misconception and fact about deafness and deaf culture and raise awareness among the public.
The proclamation urges all citizens to join in celebrating and honoring the culture, heritage and language of the deaf in the Elmira community.
