Hi, I have not been here in a long time, it was roughly 3 years ago that I got my Naida V UPs and an ICOM. I have been rarther happy with them for the most part and I don't feel that there is anything better of significance.

My company INS pays about $2500 for my aids, and my wife's pays about $4500.

So, I have approx $7k to spend, but I must do so soon I may be laid off when our contract is up.

My audi (who I have gone to for 3 years), is nice, but I think she sees a gravy train - that said, I don't think I want to start all over with a new one.

She was quoting me one price after another.

Ultimately - I think, she's planning the following for my roughly $7 to $7500.

2 Naida IX UPs
1 ICOM
1 FM Receiver (it plugs into ICOM)
1 FM transmitter - I am not sure which - easlink + or zoomlink +.

My hearing loss is profound, next stop (after these) - likely to be cochlear implants.

Is this a reasonable price for what I am getting?

I would also have my Naida Vs reconditioned as backups - or should I consider having them reconditioned and maybe sell them as used - do I need the backups?

I also have an old ICOM that does not hold a charge for a long time - I could get that fixed too.

Finally, is the IX a significant improvement over the V?

And (I guess I lied), if I get the IXs is the remote a nice to have or a mandatory thing - due to the directional zooming.

Please advise and thanks for any and all input.

Rough guess that looks within the price range my audi gave me. I have the IX UPs, the iCom and the TVLink. I think the HAs were about $2800 or $2900 each. I did not invest in the FM stuff because of their costs (I don't have ins that pays for HAs).

There are a few extra features in the IXs. You can go on Phonaks website and compare them (though you'll probably have to copy/paste the info for each into some type of word document or spreadsheet to see them side by side...that's what I did last year).

The insurance will pay for iCom, remote, and FM system? I'd double check on that. As I said, I don't have ins that will pay for HAs, but I can imagine the insurances that do may only pay for the HAs and not the extras.

Depending on what kind of ins you have. You mentioned that ins will pay $2500 and your wife will pay $4500. Also you mentioned about getting CI, my wife got CI and she only pay nearly $1000.00, the ins cover the rest (which is about $20,000 I think). So, in comparison, my wife only pay $1000 instead of $4500.. you know what I mean. You may want to talk to ins company of how much will they cover if you went ahead use CI instead of Naida...

I am not ready for CIs at this time, technically I think I could be, but mentally, not yet.

My wife has established a flex spending plan for the $4500, and my company has the ins to help.

Based on the Flex spending rules, the 'peripherals' qualify.

My audi suggested the fm items because they would provide more assistance given the poor hearing, frankly, I'd LOVE to hear better in the car, particularly my youngest daughter who sits behind me.

I still hear (via icom) my ipod music and that is great - so I don't feel that the CIs are that near term - but....

Also I hear in stereo, via the icom, for music. I use it as well for my iphone - I assume the fm system would not be stereo if I plug only the one receiver into it, but, I'd hear from both aids. I would LOVE (also) to go to the theater (Kennedy Center) or movies and hear what's going on. I'd LOVE to be able to remove the CC from the TV at home.

Having never had an fm system I do not have anything to go by, but the literature makes it sound like a quantum leap for me. Presently, I leave a meeting and I am really somewhat lost as to what happened in there.

Oh - could I control the zoom features of the IXs without a remote?

Thanks!
