First, let me say that my tinnitus has been on and off, I have experienced mild tinnitus to the worst, screaming tinnitus. I have HAs so people who have the ability to hear or not by a simple switch can find this post helpful.
First, I think tinnitus is a mental matter. Sure it is physical... in the mental aspect. I have discovered that without HAs, when I am grossly involved in work on an essay for example, I dont have tinnitus. I also found that I watch T.V., and the distraction greatly helps.
When I am by myself, lying in bed for example with no HAs, and I really focus on it, it gets worse. But I have found several ways around it. The first is, I'll read a book, or surf the web etc. Anything I can do in bed to take my attention off the ringing. When I get calmer, the ringing gets a lot better and even goes away. I think the key to why tinnitus can keep going, is because its a mental cycle, like a spinning wheel. It keeps going and you cant stop suddenly thinking about it because it makes you think about it more. You need a distraction.
With my HAs on, I dont hear tinnitus at all. I think this reinforces the theory that its your brain "filling in the silence". If you have tinnitus even with aids in, or CI on, turn on the fan or air conditioning. I have found that in the few cases of when I had tinnitus with HAs on, the white noise filtered it out and I forgot about it completely.
One of the best ways I was able to fight tinnitus with HAs on, was to turn off one hearing aid, the one opposite the ear the tinnitus seemed to come from. This seemed to shift the tinnitus to the deaf ear and stop the tinnitus in the aided ear. After a few minutes and possibly after it had died down (from distraction) I was successfully able turn the aid back on and it was gone.
After it is gone if you are successful in temporarily eliminating it, just immediately involve yourself in work, or a distraction.
I really, really, hope this helps! =]
