A veteran teacher at the Mississippi School for the Deaf is under investigation accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student.
WLBT news has been told the teacher is a 53-year-old woman who has taught literature at M.S.D. for 18-years. Sources tell us the woman is accused of being involved sexually with a 19-year-old male student and the two traded numerous e-mails containing intimate conversation.
Two investigators confiscated a school computer around 11 a.m. Tuesday. Two other men came to the school and escorted the teacher to an office. All three later left the school.
Dr. Hank Bounds, State Superintendent of Education, confirmed that an investigation has been underway since Monday and says it is a personnel matter. Bounds says, "We're investigating. We will take immediate action if we've found any validity to the accusations."
Bounds says students were not at the school when state investigators visited Tuesday morning. He would not confirm the identity of the teacher saying it is a "sensitive subject."
There's no word on whether any criminal charges will be filed pending the outcome of the state's investigation.
M.S.D. Superintendent Dr. Delores Mack was out of town and could not be reached for comment.
