They rolled out the red carpet for prom at the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, where the theme was "Deafinitely Hollywood."
"Use of the word deaf is really the essence of our students," principal Sean Virnig said through an interpreter. "It's use brings up pride in the culture, language, and history. It's the bond that holds them together."
The prom started with a grand march at the school Friday night. At the bottom of Tate Hall's main stairs, red carpets lined the path that prom-goers took in front of friends and family.
Those attending included some students from other deaf schools in California, Indiana, Maryland, whom the Minnesota students had met through various sporting events and youth leadership conferences.
Among them was junior Amy Siebert's date, Drew Hawkins, who came from Indiana. The two met more than a year ago at a basketball tournament in Wisconsin, and they've kept in contact through Internet instant messaging, Webcams, and pagers.
"I never dreamed we'd be going to prom together," Siebert said through an interpreter. "It was a year ago, and we didn't even think about prom."
After the grand march, the students were bused into Northfield, where they took a stroll in town, had dinner and a dance at The Grand, and went bowling.
