MS School for the Deaf gets a dorm makeover - WLBT 3 - Jackson, MS:

Classes start for children at the Mississippi School for the Deaf Monday. Some of the students arrived at their dorm room Sunday evening and got a huge surprise.

Building C which houses younger and older boys was completely made over by the Junior League of Jackson. Volunteers spent weeks painting walls, monogramming towels, buying new bedding and outfitting bathrooms. The six rooms have different themes and are complete with pictures of each child's family. Former student and now head football coach, Tyrone Blackmon says the rooms have been completely transformed.

"The room looked real dim, it almost looked like a jail or institution," Blackmon said of his time living at the dorm. "Now I look at my son, he has an opportunity to be in a nice facility decorated pretty like his room at home."

"In fact the name of this project is called a "home away from home." So when they come in after a day at school it will be like they're more at home and less like their just at a residential facility," said Junior League of Jackson President Valerie Linn.

More than $15,000 was spent on the project. Last year the Junior League of Jackson gave the girls' dorm a makeover.
