As a child, Lynn Morell didn't realize that not everybody grew up learning to sign. Born a hearing child to deaf parents in a largely deaf family, signing was just a part of everyday life.
When the business she'd managed for two decades closed its Staunton location earlier this year, Morell decided to take up a job she'd always considered but never tried: Interpreting.
Now, as an interpreter at Riverheads High School, Morell attends classes with one of a handful of deaf students at the school. In a sense, it's like attending high school all over again. Morell said she especially liked working in English classes, where she gets to interpret different stories.
"I love it; I absolutely love it," Morell said of her new job. "It's a perfect fit."

Education: R.E. Lee High, class of 1985. Also earned an associate degree at Blue Ridge Community College and attended some classes at Mary Baldwin College and James Madison University.
Family: Children Sam, 16, and Carlyn, 10.
Pets: A standard Poodle named Beth and a Siamese cat named Piewakkit.
What's the best part of your job? Working with deaf people, which is something I really like to do.
Childhood ambition: To be a teacher or a magazine editor.

Hobbies: Reading, writing, friends, art.
Favorite books: I like "The Witching Hour" and "The Vampire Lestat."
Favorite movies: I like "Easy Rider," "The Birds," "A Walk on the Moon," "Pretty Baby."
