BUKIT MERTAJAM: More than 30 hours after he went missing, a seven-year-old deaf and mute boy was found drowned in the Prai River here.

Mohamad Hisyam Mohamad Yusoff was found floating in the river, about 150m from his grandmother’s house in Kampung Terus, Kubang Semang, at 1.30pm yesterday.

The boy, a student of Sekolah Khas Semangat Maju in Tasek, Ipoh, had accompanied his parents to visit his grandmother Maimunah Saad, 70, for Hari Raya.

Salamiah Abdul Manaf, 31, said Mohamad Hisyam had sneaked out of the house about 9am on Thursday while she was bathing her two-year-old daughter Nor Akila.

“A neighbour said he saw my son leave the house. I then looked everywhere but could not find him.

“I have never allowed my son to go out alone in view of his condition. But he loved to play with water and must have gone to the river alone,” said a sobbing Salamiah.

When she failed to locate him, Salamiah and her husband Mohd Yusoff Salleh, 35, an army personnel attached to the Second Brigade in Ipoh, alerted villagers and a search was conducted.

Mohd Yusoff lodged a police report at 4pm the same day.

About 1,000 villagers and Rela personnel joined in the search immediately after being informed of the missing boy.

State Fire Department operations officer Wan Azmi Ahmad said he received a call about the missing boy from the Kubang Semang Police Station about 9.45am yesterday and despatched a 12-member team from the Prai and Butterworth Fire and Rescue Scuba and Boat units to help in the search.

Abdul Jalil Salleh, 53, later found his nephew’s sandals near the riverbank and the villagers then centred their search along the river.

Mohamad Hisyam’s body was later sent to the Seberang Jaya Hospital for a post-mortem.
