NEW YORK (AP) -- Police searched Sunday for the body of a woman whose 4-year-old daughter was found abandoned on a city street, and said they were considering how to tell the girl that her mother is dead.

Authorities have been unable to find 26-year-old Monica Lozada-Rivaineira since her daughter was discovered crying and shivering on a street in Queens. The girl told neighbors her father left her there and drove away.

Cesar Ascarrunz, 32, was charged Saturday with murdering his live-in girlfriend. Police say Ascarrunz killed Lozada-Rivaineira and dumped her corpse in a pile of trash on a Queens street corner.

Police were led to Ascarrunz by tips from the public after 4-year-old Valery Lozada appeared on TV on Thursday. The child, her hair in pigtails, described her mother as looking "like a princess." Police ultimately used records from Valery's day care center to identify her mother.

"This child has captured the hearts of all New Yorkers," said District Attorney Richard A. Brown. "I hope she can grow up to lead a normal life."

Child welfare officials took the unusual step of putting her on television hoping that would produce more information about her identity.

Kevin Flood, a firefighter who gave the girl a drink and a fruit snack that night, said her hair was tousled as if she had just been awakened. But she showed no signs of abuse and neglect, authorities said.

"She was scared. She was crying," said Flood, 34. "She said her daddy had left her on the corner."

Valery was asking to see her mother, but authorities were waiting to break the news of her mother's death, said John Mattingly, commissioner of the city Administration for Children's Services. Dozens of people have volunteered to adopt her, he said.

"This little girl is as strong and capable and bright as she can be because of her mother," Mattingly said. "It makes us hopeful for the future ... that she will in the long run do well."

City officials were trying to contact family members and have already reached a female cousin of her mother's in New York, Mattingly said.

Ascarrunz also was charged with reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, child abandonment and evidence tampering, Brown said. If convicted on the murder charge, he faces 25 years to life in prison.

Lozada-Rivaineira was last seen at the apartment she shared with Ascarrunz late on Sept. 24, authorities said. According to a criminal complaint, Ascarrunz choked Lozada-Rivaineira to death in the apartment, put her body in a plastic bag and left it in the living room for two days.

On Sept. 26, he took her body from the apartment and dumped it in a pile of trash on a Queens street corner, the complaint said.

Investigators found traces of blood in the apartment. Ascarrunz told police he had cut Lozada-Rivaineira's throat to revive her after choking her, according to the complaint.

Ascarrunz had not been arraigned by late Saturday. A spokesman for the district attorney said he believed Ascarrunz did not have an attorney.

Missing Virginia Student's Body Identified
By KRISTEN GELINEAU, AP

Taylor Marie Behl, 17, has been missing since Sept. 5.

RICHMOND, Va. (Oct. 6) - Investigators said Thursday they identified the body of a Virginia Commonwealth University freshman who had been missing for a month.

How Taylor Marie Behl, 17, died had not yet been determined.

"I have the utmost confidence that we're going to be able to resolve this case," Richmond Police Chief Rodney Monroe said.

A task force investigating Behl's disappearance found the body buried off a dirt path in rural Mathews County on Wednesday. Dental records were used for identification.

Earlier Thursday, before the identity was confirmed, Behl's mother addressed reporters.

"I'm sure you can imagine the shock and horror I feel knowing that the body found is most likely my baby's," Taylor Behl's mother, Janet Pelasara, said outside of her home in Vienna, Va.

Behl left her dorm Sept. 5 with her mobile phone, a small amount of cash, a student ID and her car keys. She told her roommate she would be back in a few hours.

The teen's car was found two weeks later, and its license plates had been replaced with Ohio plates reported stolen several weeks earlier.

The police chief said the area where Behl's body was found was searched after police examined photographs on the Web site of an amateur photographer who was one of the last people to see Behl alive.

Ben Fawley, 38, has not been charged in the Behl case, but he is being held without bond on child pornography charges.

Fawley had a romantic relationship with the teen, his attorney, Chris Collins, has said. A telephone message left for Collins was not immediately returned Thursday.

Pelasara's attorney, George Peterson, said he believes the strongest suspect is already in custody.

Fawley was questioned by police in Behl's disappearance and classified as a person of interest at one point during the investigation. He was arraigned last week on 16 counts of possession of child pornography.

Detectives later seized more than 70 items from Fawley's home, including a box of bones, a machete and part of a box spring bearing a reddish-brown stain, according to a search warrant.

Behl's family planned to make funeral arrangements later Thursday, Peterson said.

Associated Press Writers Ashton Williams in Vienna, Va., and Michael Felberbaum in Mathews, Va., contributed to this report.

i feel bad for that child, she didn't deserved it, her father should think of her than anything. That's awful sad.

that sad about 17 yr old, she didn't contiune w/ her life.

Aww she's such a cutiee, I feel really bad for that little girl, her mother is sure beautiful....I would adopted that little girl myself..... :(

:( These 2 stories are so sad, and so tragic. That poor little girl, now has no mother. What an adorable little girl, and she's so precious, too.

A mother now is without her beautiful daughter.

Why would anyone do something this tragic to leave a little girl motherless, and a mom without her precious daughter?

That child won't ever have a stable family?

Once she turns 18, she will have to be very independent
and have to look for job.... and work hard and get her
own place...

that is sad,
look at me, I take things for granted, I just living with my mom
and not work.

But she has no mom now... and the world is harsh enough.

Too many missing ppl and children, sadly, we can't imagine what will happen next because normally, bodies are found in later days. :( A few are lucky ppl who survive but will have traumatic nightmares. Bodies turn up are not fortunately. God rest their souls. It's sad. I wish it stops now but it will continue for many centuries.

I hope that boyfriend of hers will rot in cell. It doesn't seem that he's a father of Valery because her last name is not the same as his last name. He has Ascarrunz last name, while Valery has her Lozada last name. So she's used to calling her "daddy." We have some neighbors who have kids, they call them "papi or papa" thought the guys are not their dads.

As for missing teen, darn. Prayers and thoughts are with her families and for Valery as well. :(

Thats right, It isnt her father. Her real father is in jail in Bolivia. Here it said:

"The judge said a paternal relative, identified by media as Iris Carolina Saavedra of suburban Chicago, a cousin of Valery's biological father, also had filed a custody petition. The biological father, who is serving time in a Bolivian prison on drug charges, signed off on that petition, and was not making a custody claim of his own, the judge said."

Is it because bad things happened to people
because of bad decision they make???

I am somewhat street smart, and I don't
trust many people....
I just make sure I don't be with the wrong people.

And that girl Natalee Holloway in Aruba...
I don't know why she hang around with
boys she doesn't even know and should
have hang out more with her friends.

And I won't piss off somebody just because
that person did this and that to somebody else...
I won't get into anybody business, if they
have problems, I just stay out of it...
and I won't make situation worse for myself and
anybody else.

If somebody insult me, it is better to walk away...

And even in AllDeaf forum, yall noticed that I
don't pay much attention to people who insult
me, just because those people don't like my opinion...
I just ignore them... and say good things...
sometimes I would say something back at them
and leave them alone after ward.
It isn't worth bickering back and forth over and over
again...

Because if you pissed off somebody, and you
have no idea who that person is...
what if that person is a psycho... and that
person will kill you.

Internet is good, I can piss off some people here...
because they don't know where I live.

But out there in real world, I won't get in fight.
I just keep my opinion to myself.

I don't mean to be cruel...
but I think that Behl, Monica, and Natalie,
they probably knew something wrong...
but didn't do anything, until it is too late.

Nancy Grace on CNN said Ben Fawley had Bipolar disorder...
so I don't know if Behl knew that or not.

Am I wrong?

Can't believe it, now Valery will have the worse life she ever grows up knowing what her real dad did. I hope and pray that the families will keep nurturing her with better life in future. That's worse sad. :(
