Rugby Football Union - Miss England supports England Deaf rugby team
The current Miss England has thrown her support behind the England Deaf Rugby squad for their opening international of the season against Wales at Broadstreet RFC near Coventry on Sunday February 3 (1pm).
Georgia Horsley, who represented England at the Miss World event last month, is a lifelong rugby fan who will be attending the game against Wales, the current deaf rugby World champions.
Georgia, who has a hearing impairment, will present the England players with their caps and will also present the trophy to the winning captain.
“It’s a great honour to be invited along to this game to present the players with their England caps and to present the trophy to the eventual winners," she said. "I’m really looking forward to a great game. Having a hearing impairment myself I have the utmost respect for these guys who play a team sport at the level they do.”
The England Deaf team will play their best ever prepared squad against Wales having selected the players after a series of regional trials.
The game is the first of two internationals the England Deaf team will play at Broadstreet this season with Scotland to follow on March 9.
The squad is drawn from club registered English players from across the country who have a certified hearing impairment the equivalent of being fully deaf in one ear although many of the players have a profound hearing impairment.
Tickets for these internationals cost £5.00 for adults and £2.50 for concessions.
England Deaf Rugby Union is an Associate Member of the RFU, and their programme is supported by the Community Rugby Department.
This season the BBC are filming the Union's activities profiling several of the players for an upcoming documentary.
There are eight newcomers in the England Deaf squad for the Wales game in winger Alex Astbury (Twickenham), scrum-half Adam Smallwood (Bridgnorth), props Tom Cowdale (Wolverhampton) and Peter Altham (Sale Aacdemy), hooker Mark Vandenbrouck (Paignton), locks Kris Mannering (Guildford) and Andy Jones (Stamford) and back-row Henry Skinner (Handsworth).
