Age: 17

School:
Sophomore at Scranton State School for the Deaf

At home: Lives in Scranton with parents, Vladimir and Emilia, and brother, Vladimir Jr.

Born in Bulgaria, she moved to Scranton at age 12 knowing no English or American Sign Language. She and her brother are profoundly deaf. Her parents moved to Scranton because they felt Scranton State School for the Deaf was the best choice for a quality education for their children. In five years, she and her brother have learned both American Sign Language and English. They still speak Bulgarian at home.

Radoslava’s school activities include honor roll, vice president of the student body government, Junior National Association for the Deaf, Rotary Interact Club and drama club. She was chosen to play Lady Capulet in the upcoming school production of “Romeo and Juliet.” She is second-place winner in National Marie Phillip American Sign Language Competition in the poetry division held in Boston. She was recently chosen to participate in a National Youth Leadership Camp for the Deaf in Oregon this summer. Only 64 applicants are chosen for the camp from a pool of 500. She flew to Arizona in October to participate in the Junior National Association for the Deaf Convention and competed in the Junior NAD National Pageant, where she placed fourth. She also plays on the basketball, soccer and volleyball teams.

With such a busy schedule, how do you balance school and activities?

No problem. ... I keep a daily schedule.

What was it like being involved in the Junior National Association for the Deaf pageant?

It was very exciting, and I was nervous because it was my first time in a pageant. It was a great opportunity to gain experience. I feel I developed a tremendous amount of confidence from the experience.

What do you most like to do in your free time?

Read, work on my computer, movies, ride my bike.

What book character do you best identify with?

I’ve seen bits and pieces of myself in some characters, but nothing really similar.

What is your ideal career path?

I would like to be an actress or an artist, possibly study psychology. … I’m keeping my options open.
