SALEM, S.D. - The McCook County Commission has again delayed a final vote on a zoning ordinance that would allow construction of a town that serves people who use sign language.

A group against the Laurent project told commissioners Tuesday new information suggests part of the land south of Salem was zoned incorrectly.

Supporters and opponents now plan to make sure the ordinance is clear before taking it to the commission for a final vote.

Opponents could then gather petitions and force a public vote.

Commissioners have spent months grappling with the ordinance, which will govern future projects in the county.

Laurent needs a new zoning ordinance because the county's use-based zoning does not allow for construction of a town.

We all seen that kind of sequence with EFTC's ASL Ranch in California , DeafCity in Texas ,and my own DeafTown project in California. Now it's the Laurent project geting the same trip.

Maybe all these things is a sign the deaf communities need to start considering.

Some people can tell when it is time to stop chasing something that will never happen, some dont and they waste their money in the long run and blame the leaders.

I didnt quit on the DeafTown project, I felt obstacles faced was a genuine sign that DeafTown is simply something that'll never happen in front of me or anything like that happening anywhere else.

It's better Miller takes over a town like the Ranjesshes done before. We all pick a town and start moving into it and then take over it by getting deaf people elected and through litigation settlements we make the town accessible to the deafs. It's a lot easier than what Miller is doing. That's something I'll be happy to participate in.
