A lot needs to be done to bring the deaf on board regarding HIV/AIDS messages for them to decide their destiny.

Officially opening the Botswana Society for the Deaf HIV/AIDS awareness workshop in Gaborone this week, the Assistant Minister of Local Government, Ambrose Masalila called on all to join hands to support the deaf.

The national HIV/AIDS policy and strategic framework describes the role of national leaders, various government ministries and community based organisations, persons living with HIV/AIDS and the deaf people are part of these categories, he said.

Masalila wondered how the deaf could access valuable messages conveyed through the media and other sources while there were no measures in place to accommodate them.

He said they were further disadvantaged with regards to medical confidentiality since in most cases there was a need for a sign language interpreter to facilitate communication.

The workshop, which has among others brought together the deaf from thirteen districts and sub-districts, was aimed at sensitising the public about deaf population and HIV/AIDS.

It also sought to bring the deaf community on board with regard to human rights and the consequences of HIV/AIDS. BOPA
