Washington , DC - 11 April 2006 - Calling for “good, comprehensive immigration reform,” J.W. “Bill” Marriott, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Marriott International, Inc. (NYSE:MAR), today said he hopes Congress “works out their differences,” to do “what is right for our industry, our economy and our nation of immigrants.”

Speaking at a global tourism and travel conference here, Marriott rhetorically asked, “Do you industry executives think of yourselves as felons?” He continued, “We need to stand together to include everyone in our very diverse work force. It is the diversity of our workforce that makes us great, yet some in Congress want to criminalize the undocumented and their employers.”

Marriott said that the U.S. faces “long-term labor shortages, especially at the entry level,” and that hospitality industry employment was at “near-record highs.” He said the industry needed workers from other nations to fill necessary jobs.

While developed nations worldwide are facing cultural and economic challenges fostered by immigration, providing opportunities was critical, said Mr. Marriott. “Every country will want to regulate immigration for the sake of its security and citizens, but we must pursue policies that allow people to seek the chance to build better lives for themselves and their families,” he said.

Marriott also reiterated his call for policies allowing freer travel to the U.S., saying that difficulty obtaining U.S. visas was preventing millions of visitors from contributing to the U.S. economy. “Last year, 30 million Chinese traveled abroad. They flocked to France, Germany Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macao. But only 200,000 of that 30 million – came to the U.S.,” he said.

Marriott hailed the burgeoning travel and tourism industry, citing increasing wealth worldwide, particularly in China, India, Russia and Eastern Europe. He also noted that in the U.S. baby boomers were retiring with plenty of disposable income and that Generations X and Y behind them loved to travel. He said that while encouraging this active growth the industry needed to remain a “positive force for good” focused on protecting the environment and working with governments and international agencies to prevent human trafficking.

You know, I think maybe it's time for American parents to start expecting their kids to take summer jobs while in high school...and not just McDonalds. It can't be good for our cultural work ethic that kids turn their noses up at jobs that require real labor.

The other positions should be given to LEGAL immigrants who came over here the right way--which is why I'd suggest accelerating the legal process at the same time as increasing border security.

I do not understand why Heath wants to boycott Mariott Hotel even though he could not afford the expensive hotel room with mini bar.

Why can't he boycott Holiday Inn? :dunno:

I agree with RoseImmortal. I even remember doing the kind of work young people snub at today. As I've opined before that we are a nation of immigrants but we are also a nation of laws. Make them do it the right way. Why should they get to pick and choose what laws they should or should not comply with?

I saw a straw poll somewhere where the numbers were something like 90% of 28 thousand polled who were for illegals to get in line and do it right!

I am not anti-immigration, obviously; I am for LEGAL immigration.

Part of the problem with immigration is our culture itself. Would we have an immigration problem on the scale we have now if we didn't mind so much the work that they do now? Of course not! The immigrants would have a much less incentive to come here especially that we don't have a generous welfare system like the Europeans.

On the other hand, even if we did alot of that work we would still have a problem. There aren't enough of us to do all of them as our population growth sans the immigrants would actually be slowly decreasing anyway. Only because of this torrid immigration we are growing in population.

Either way, we are in a bind. So, to make the best of it, I agree that we should work on enforcing the laws and accomodate the legal immigrants and somehow deal reasonably (the felony bit was over the top) with the illegals. We are a land of immigrants and the melting pot has changed over the centuries and it will continue to change.
