WOODBURY, New York - A New York man is donating his 320th pint (half-a-litre) of blood this week, making him one of two people in the U.S. who has given 40 gallons.

Seventy-five-year-old Al Fischer of Massapequa plans to reach the milestone Tuesday, 58 years after he started giving blood.

According to a New York Blood Center official, only 83-year-old Maurice Wood has donated more blood than Fischer. Wood is a retired railroad inspector from St. Louis.

Fischer, a print shop operator, donates blood about six times a year. He says he and Wood are engaged in a friendly rivalry and last spoke to each other a few months ago.

Long Island Blood Services executive director Harvey Schaffler says Fischer has helped almost 1,000 people.

NY man's next blood donation will be gallon No. 40, making him 2nd American to reach milestone

It's good to see that kind of dedication, even if it is a competition. :P

Agreed. I'm always up for stories about ordinary folk that do extraordinary things to help others.

That is awesome!!

If we had more people like him.. We would not have such a major shortage. I have donated blood in the past. I need to do it more often. Never know. Some one you love may need blood. or yourself may be in need.

My hubby is a universal donor and the blood bank loves to get his blood.

That is awesome. :)

I am thinking to donate my blood next week as Australian Red Cross Blood Service will be at University next week.

In this day and age, to give blood, you have to wear a T-shirt saying "No Sex please, I donate blood"

Guess he eats a lot of Liver.....40 Gallons??...Probably one of the "Walking Dead"....or a "love-starved Vampire".....Noticed he does look sort of "pale"....

Seriously, that's a lot of blood!.....Kudos to him....I would pass out after the first pint! I'm anemic.
