Claimed he was a shaman

A 43-year-old Sheboygan man, who claims to be a shaman, pleaded no contest today in Sheboygan County Circuit Court to sexually assaulting and impregnating a deaf, blind and mute woman in 2004.

Neng Moua of 1541 N. 15th St., is now convicted of felony second-degree sexual assault for impregnating the woman around Jan. 1, 2004.

The woman gave birth to the child Oct. 16, 2004, Christine Cvetan, a nurse at St. Nicholas Hospital, testified during Moua’s preliminary hearing in June last year.

Moua told police that he’s given alcohol during shaman rituals, Yeng Yang, Sheboygan Police community service officer, testified during Moua’s preliminary hearing. Yang interpreted for Moua during police questioning and said Moua was asked if he had sex with the victim.

“He said he could not recall when or how, but if it would be him, he was drunk,” Yang said in June.

ChaSong Yang, executive director of the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association of Sheboygan, said last year that a shaman is a spiritual healer who finds out what is spiritually wrong with a person, much like a psychotherapist — not a magic healer as they are often portrayed.

Alcohol does accompany some shaman ceremonies, but ChaSong Yang likened its use to that of communion wine in the Roman Catholic Church. Intoxication is not part of any ritual.

Moua’s sentencing is tentatively scheduled for July 14, but it’s not likely to occur on that date, District Attorney Joe DeCecco said. Moua faces up to 25 years in prison, 15 years extended supervision and a $100,000 fine
