Hi, I am a hearing senior in High School in Waterford, Wisconsin. I am taking an ASL class this semester and was assigned a paper to write about the following points:
  • How were deaf children educated during 1868 - 1888
  • Were there any organizations established in America during 1868 - 1888. What were their missions?
  • Was there a sporting community during this time period?
  • Were there any famous deaf people in the arts during this period?

I have dug through the internet and my local library and have not found this information. Anything you can provide will be appreciated!

Thanks

I highly recommend you to contact Gallaudet University where they have a great deal of history and information in their Deaf Archives at their library. Here's two links below:

Or pick up a book called, "Deaf Heritage" by Dr. Jack Gannon.

"When the Mind Hears" by Dr. Harlan Lane is an excellent read.

Here are some additional books about Deaf Culture (sorry, I do not have author or publisher names, but I'm sure you can do a title search on Amazon or Google):

Train Go Sorry: Inside a Deaf World

Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture

The Mask of Benevolence: Disabling the Deaf Community
