London Young Deaf Riders Project Wins Award | BikeRadar.com
The London Cycling Campaign has named Ealing’s Signing In Deaf Club as the 2007 Best Cycling Initiative for Children in its annual awards. Signing In Deaf’s training sessions helped many deaf children ride a bike for the first time, and helped others improve their cycling skills.
It is one of four projects – out of 25 nominees - that have won London Cycling Awards, which recognise the best contributions to the increase in cycling in London. The awards were presented at LCC’s annual general meeting on Tuesday October 16.
Clare Neely, who chaired the judging panel for the London Cycling Awards 2007, said, “What is so exciting about these awards is they show the excellent work that is going on across London to encourage cycling. It made it very difficult to choose the winners.”
The Signing In Deaf Club, which was set up in September 2005, organises specialist training for children to help overcome balance difficulties associated with deafness. It also organises regular cycle rides for the children. One of the childrens’ parents said “My son aged 11 had wanted to ride a bike for ages and thanks to deaf club he can, and all he wants now is more challenges on his bike'.
