A new president at the world's only liberal arts deaf university has Austin residents up in arms.
Protesters formed a human chain outside the Texas Capitol on Sunday. They say they do not want recently elected Jane Fernandes as the President of Gallaudet University in Washington D.C.
"Gallaudet is the center of the deaf world. What happens at Gallaudet often reflects what's happening in the deaf community nationwide. So because of that, we often consider the president of Gallaudet the leader of the entire deaf community," one protester said.
Protestors say the search for a new president lacked diverse applicants. Some are also concerned because Fernandes was born without being able to hear but still grew up speaking rather than using sign language.
They want her to step down and reopen the search for president. Students, faculty and staff continue to protest outside entrances to the university.
