I tore it up a whlie ago but I got a letter from a hospital
they were doing research about children with deafness/hard of hearing.
As much as I wanted to provide them with valueable info I couldn't see my kids being a lab rat. An audiologist coming and testing them when they have their own that they feel comfortable with. They would pay me 2 payments of 150. The file would be closed and tucked away.

Again I didn't feel comfortable...
hopsitals are fickle about documentations.

It could be there..and then disappear with all my kids info.
So do you think I was wrong? Or should I have done it?

:wtf: I hate that!!! I would felt same thing. That is phucking CRAP! GRR!!!

I am glad you tore the letters up! :giggle: Best is in fire! ROFL!

I'll go: Me :slap: the lab! And hope she/he get a HUGE black eyes!

I mean giving me money was a little much...
if they really wanted documentations they could have
had them by my own audiologist who would provide them
all the neccessary info without giving too much info away.

Again, I felt kind of bad because I want to enhance the hearing
world with our world yet I also knew inside I just didn't feel right
about doing it.

That's right.

I don't like being used as a rat or anything and give me the money. No way.

No. You absolutely were NOT wrong in doing what you did. I am not deaf, but was born with a congenital malformation of the spine. Throughout my childhood, we would get requests from people asking us to take part in research studies. For the most part, we declined. I did, however, take part in one, and was SORRY I did so. It wasn't what I had expected, and it also "invited" more requests later down the road. I didn't want to become a perpetual lab rat for them to experiment on, and that's exactly what I felt like.

To me, it sends the message that we are "abnormal", and I really hate that.

Hmm, well maybe if there are some research studies with POSITIVE outlook, it may be benefitcal??

My husband works with researchers to study ASL and how it affects brains with linguistics and whatnot...

I partook in studies that analyze how I sign if I have to "yell" or sign lazy like if I am too tired to talk, where I look on that person while that person signs to me, how often I pause between signs, or how often I use pronouns (him, them, these, etc). They also studied CODAs to see how facial expressive they are compared to average hearies...

So I have my brain scanned while I answered questions about what I see during a study which was to figure out how fast and well the deafies can see compared to hearies. Hearies usually see the right image faster and better than left but for deafies-- images in any place all over are the same for thedeafies (maybe because we have bigger occopital lobes to make-up the lacking use of our temporal lobes?). I have my eyes being filmed to see where I look at while somebody is signing. It is weird to see my eye following the person!

SO I never feel negative about partaking in those studies because they want to PROVE that the ASL has its own distinictive traits and effects (eye-tracking, hands positioning, more receptive in visual, etc).

However it does bug me sometimes when they BEG me to come back or to find more people to join.
But I do need money. As long they are not shooting anything up me, I am OK. :)

IMO, No you are not wrong at all. Nobody is saying it is right or wrong. There are alot of places that does a lab research for the purpose to gain information. I am aware that at a point, sometime a lab research will go wrong and cause a fiasco. With that you're not feeling comfortable of the thought that your children would be a "Lab Rat", You're entitled to feel like that. Do keep an open mind, It is more likely the Lab won't do any harm to your children. They cannot harm your children or anything else for that matter. I am curious, What kind of research are they doing related to the children who are Deaf/Hard Of Hearing? Are they going to compare the audiogram or whatchamacallit? It's just a possibility.

Again, Just a thought - You are the only one that knows your children too well enough and nobody would have measured the amount to know your children well enough to say this and that when you are the mother of your children. You have the upper hand in this.

My goodness!! I am glad you tore that letter. They are so wrong for what they were asking.

I couldnt do that to my kids. No way!!!

if I have kids I won't do that to them. I did for myself a few weeks ago at BU and MIT in Boston .. just a hearing test and write ASL/English tests.
No needles, pills nothing. if needles or pills .. No thanks!
... altogether 5 1/2 hours and it was fun!

soon me get alot of money hee hee heee....

That's no surprise to me. The things people do or try to do now-a-days. Its crazy! There's no way I'd let my kids be a lab rat for anything.
