TORONTO, Sept. 19 /CNW/ - Legal Aid Ontario today announced that its
toll-free TTY number has been successfully launched across the Province. The
new service will provide increased access by improving communication
capabilities with LAO clients who are deaf/deafened/hard of hearing or have
speech disabilities.
Clients of Legal Aid Ontario are people with low or no income. Every day
LAO helps almost 4,000 disadvantaged people, including single mothers seeking
child support from delinquent ex-partners; victims of domestic violence;
parents seeking custody of children to protect them from abuse; refugees; and accused persons.
The new service enhances existing LAO services by allowing clients to
communicate directly with experienced LAO staff instead of a third party about
the status of their applications, how to apply for legal aid and other general
inquiries. Previously clients had to contact a "Relay Service", which served
as a go-between for the deaf and people with speech disabilities.
"Legal Aid Ontario is always looking for ways to improve our services,"
said CEO, Angela Longo. "This is just another example of our commitment to
ensuring all of our clients have access to the services we provide. Legal Aid
Ontario will continue to develop and implement solutions that improve the
services we deliver to the public."
The TTY service begins this month. Legal Aid Ontario clients in Toronto
can contact 416-598-8867 and outside Toronto can contact toll-free
1-866-641-8867.
Legal Aid Ontario is an independent agency established in 1998 by the
Government of Ontario. Last year the organization assisted more than one
million people under its mandate to provide legal aid services to low-income
Ontarians.
