Anyways, I was in a lecture this morning and the topic was NESB (non-English speaking background) students.
I had a thought about Deaf/hearing impaired students learning another language as a part of LOTE (language other than English) in schools...
I was wondering if any of you had the opportunity to learn another language whilst at school?
I know for most of us here, our first language is sign language (ASL, Auslan, etc - depending which country you are from), and English is our second language BUT the sign language we are fluent in is a form of English - visually - if you know what I mean
I don't know of any Deaf students being given the option to learn another language (written, as learning another language orally would be difficult for Deaf students - I think?) whilst being in school.
Personally, I'd have loved being able to get involved in LOTE lessons at schools - all schools I went to never gave me the option to participate in LOTE lessons, which I thought was unfair.
