NASHUA, N.H. Lawyers for a deaf Nashua (New Hampshire) man accused of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl and an adult woman say his communication skills are so limited he may not be competent to stand trial.
Thirty-two-year-old Victor Laporte faces several counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault. Prosecutors say he assaulted the girl twice last spring or summer, and of raped the woman in May or June.
He also is charged with endangering the welfare of a 14-year-old girl by propositioning her for sex.
Laporte's lawyers have asked the court to bring in an expert to evaluate his ability to stand trial. They say he does not know sign language, and his ability to read and write is minimal.
Laporte has been free on bail since his arrest in July, but prosecutors say he should be jailed because he has sent e-mails to the woman he is accused of raping, and has parked outside her house. A hearing on that issue is scheduled next month.
