Kiwanis members learned about the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) of the Treasure Coast, Inc. from one of their equipment trainers, Desiree Serpas at their luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 6.
Some of the services that the DHHS provides are sign language interpreting, consumer advocacy, client assistance, sign language classes and community outreach and education programs.
The DHHS is a non-profit, 501c (3) charitable organization.
Ms. Serpas detailed one program that the DHHS offers. DHHS operates a State Phones on Loan Regional Distribution Center out of their offices in Port St. Lucie. This is offered through Florida Telecommunications Relay, Inc. (FTRI).
This program provides special telephones for hard of hearing, deaf, deaf/blind and speech impaired Floridians. If you experience problems or frustration when using the telephone, FTRI may have a solution for you.
This program loans special telephone equipment to individuals for as long as they need to use it. Equipment that is loaned includes phones that amplify incoming sound; devices that alert you when the phone rings; captioned telephones; telecommunications devices for the deaf; Braille TTY for deaf/blind individuals; and phones that amplify outgoing speech.
The phones and ringers are loaned on a long-term basis at no charge to the citizen. There is a surcharge on all landlines in Florida which pays for the FTRI program.
In order to be eligible, you must be a Florida resident, age 3 or older with a certification as hard of hearing, deaf, deaf/blind or speech impaired.
To receive a phone you must complete a FTRI application and have it signed by an approved certifier or visit the offices in Port St. Lucie office, 10016 South Federal Highway, Port St. Lucie.
