KARACHI: The hearing ability of a majority of Karachi’s citizens is seriously impaired due to the intense noise pollution, said Dr Qaiser Sajjad, general secretary, Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) while addressing a conference held by the PMA on Wednesday.

Compared to the people of other cities, where noise pollution has not turned critical, the hearing ability of Karachiites is below normal. This is due to the high noise pollution created by more than 30,000 rickshaws.

The ignition of an aeroplane engine creates a sound measuring from 125 to 140 decibels, while a rickshaw engine produces a sound from 95 to 110 decibels. It is due to this that the hearing of those travelling frequently in rickshaws and their drivers could be seriously damaged.

Apart from Karachi, in all other major cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Quetta and Peshawar, rickshaw drivers are forced to follow rules due to the strict implementation of the law. It is because of this that the environmental situation has not deteriorated to a critical extent in these places, he said.
