John Schumacher - New Deaf Advocate at the Hearing Speech and Deaf Center - Cincinnati News at Cincinnati.com
The Board of Directors and staff of the Hearing Speech & Deaf Center of Greater Cincinnati, are very pleased to announce the appointment John Schumacher as the Center’s new Deaf Advocate. John is a Deaf man who was raised in a Deaf family, (father, mother, brothers and sisters all late-deafened but knew ASL) where being deaf is viewed in a positive way. Having been born “profoundly” hearing he slowly became deaf from grade school until he became profoundly deaf by high school. John earned his BA degree in American Sign Language Studies in May, 2006 from Gallaudet University's Deaf Studies program.
As HSDC/CSDs Deaf Advocate he will be teaching and explaining civil rights legislation, what services and programs are available for people who are ASL native users or use various different communication modes. He also plans to work with Deaf teenagers and with leaders in the Deaf community and will try to encourage better networking of services available in the greater Cincinnati area and Tri-State area.
John will work to provide outreach, education, referral and provide advocacy services to people who are culturally Deaf, medically deaf, or hard-of-hearing throughout the Tri-State area. John will work on positive ideas and create workable solutions for hearing people to understand deafness and ASL and to advocate for Deaf people who receive services that they are legally entitled to by the American Disabilities Act and other laws supporting deaf people’s rights.
