Jeffrey E. Young, a filmmaker, aspiring actor and president of the Santa Rosa High School Class of 2000, died July 20.

Young, 29, struggled with depression and anxiety in recent years and suffered complications after a self-inflicted knife wound the previous month.

“This illness took his life,” said his mother Cindy Young of Santa Rosa.

Young was born deaf, but had many accomplishments at an early age.

He earned “The Every Student Succeeding” Award from the State of California along with other awards and scholarships, including Santa Rosa Rotary Club's Student of the Year.

He was City Champion Wrestler in 8th grade and also excelled in tennis, track and cross country. Snowboarding and surfing also were passions.

A Gifted and Talented Student (GATE) with a high grade point average in advanced placement courses, he was a popular student and an enthusiastic participant in the Odyssey of the Mind competitions. His high school team won first place in the Redwood Regionals and went on to win fifth place in the state competition.

As a student in the Santa Rosa High School ArtQuest Program, Young produced a stop-action film entitled “The Magic Ball” that was aired on HBO.

He was chosen among the top students in the state to attend the California State Summer School for the Arts at Cal Arts Institute in Valencia. He also was selected for Multimedia Arts Camp for the Deaf in Santa Monica, sponsored by the Deaf Arts Council, with deaf actor Anthony Natale of “Mr. Holland's Opus.”

The son of an international corporate banker, Young was born in Hong Kong.

His family moved to Santa Rosa in 1992, where he attended Hidden Valley Elementary School before going on to Santa Rosa Junior High and Santa Rosa High. As a sophomore at SRHS, Young was profiled in the Press Democrat, and had this prophetic advice for other teens: “Get your lazy butts of the couch! There are so many things to do. Life is short, man!”

He received a degree in film and media studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 2007, but struggled to find work.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his father Phil Young and brother Wendell Young, both of Santa Rosa, and grandfather John Harrell of Ardmore, Okla.

A celebration of his life will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 21 at White Oak Winery, 7505 Highway 128 in Healdsburg.

Contributions are suggested to The Jeffrey Young Memorial Fund, GLAD (Greater Los Angeles Agency on Deafness, Inc), 2222 Laverna Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90041.
