Last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan has actually moved the island closer to the United States and shifted the planet's axis.

The quake caused a rift 15 miles below the sea floor that stretched 186 miles long and 93 miles wide, according to the AP. The areas closest to the epicenter of the quake jumped a full 13 feet closer to the United States, geophysicist Ross Stein at the United States Geological Survey told The New York Times.

The world's fifth-largest, 8.9 magnitude quake was caused when the Pacific tectonic plate dove under the North American plate, which shifted Eastern Japan towards North America by about 13 feet (see NASA's before and after photos at right). The quake also shifted the earth's axis by 6.5 inches, shortened the day by 1.6 microseconds, and sank Japan downward by about two feet. As Japan's eastern coastline sunk, the tsunami's waves rolled in.

Why did the quake shorten the day? The earth's mass shifted towards the center, spurring the planet to spin a bit faster. Last year's massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile also shortened the day, but by an even smaller fraction of a second. The 2004 Sumatra quake knocked a whopping 6.8 micro-seconds off the day.

After the country's 1995 earthquake, Japan placed high-tech sensors around the country to observe even the slightest movements, which is why scientists are able to calculate the quake's impact down to the inch. "This is overwhelmingly the best-recorded great earthquake ever," Lucy Jones, chief scientist for the Multi-Hazards project at the U.S. Geological Survey, told The Los Angeles Times.

The tsunami's waves necessitated life-saving evacuations as far away as Chile. Fisherman off the coast of Mexico reported a banner fishing day Friday, and speculated that the tsunami knocked sealife in their direction.

When I saw this, I wondered if it was a mistake. So incredible! Science Daily confirmed it on the top of their web page.

It may not be new in the history of the Earth, but it has never been as well documented as this as Japan has hundreds of sensors around their country. We will be learning more about how continents move as well as plate tectonics and how it affects the movement of the ocean. I find this to be very useful information in regards to making stronger buildings and also better preparedness and emergency management for when the next disaster hits.

With what tool?

Nevertheless, it's interesting that mother nature has such strength to move a country by few feet.

Yes it is amazing. An earthquake last year did this as well. 3 or 4 more and we might see Polar bears in California. I bet the taxes scare them back up North though.

Well, then they're welcome to come down South and not be worried about taxes. I'm sure they'll bring us some fishes in return for refuge ;)

Salmon on the barbie???? :hmm:

I can see it now.... Polar bear couple on the beach. "a those winters up north....what were we thinking"

hope they use alot of sunscreen. Their skin is awfully white.

can I mention... polar bear skin is black to absorb the available sun's warmth in their traditional climate.

that is amazing about the earth moving as described:shock:

WOW, I did not know that about polar bear skin , but makes sense. You know I agree that the earth has probably had it's axis jolted in the past, we just were unable to document..I know the east coast also has a fault and it would make sense if the axis was jolted even a bit we could see the same thing here in the us on the east coast. I also read in USA today that they will soon be anouncing that Atlantis is in fact laying on the bottom of the sea bed ( well basically, they have discovered enough undersea formations that would be impossible for the sea to carve out) these are blocks stacked
Wow...I am amazed everytime I hear about all this going on....and I hope we can save the Polar Bears...and alot of other species...perhaps...I hope all is well with you my friend..You have been in my thought...Peace M♥♥♥

I think most people know that from 5th grade science. Sorry the joke missed. The fur is even more interesting to me.

Btw. Salmon is difficult at best on the BBQ

polar bears rarely travel half way around the globe

polar bears do not speak English

Yeah, The Earth shifted. No wonder why my neck is hurting. I think I suffer from whiplash. ;)

woops! sorry TX! not your problem - mine - not so "with it" at moment <mom>

I seriously do find polar bears very intriguing.

Me too! Bears in general are my favorite animals. I like Polar bears and Black bears the best.

I'm sure they'll love their time here. The whiff of salmon on the barbie will send them salivating.

I didn't know that, seriously. How cool. So basically, they're a black and white bear, cool! :)

Well, they might have to travel for a refuge. No English is necessary. Gestures will suffice. Once they're ready, we can get them to follow a boat taking them half way to the Antarctica. Then off they go.

I seem to have a answer for everything today. A streak that won't last, surely.

I can see that they're a majestic animals. I got to meet Winnie the Pooh in Canada ;)
