BAW: Investigation to Probe Whether Attack of Black Student at Deaf School Was a Hate Crime
An investigation is continuing to determine whether a recent attack on a black student at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., was a hate crime.
The Sept. 29 incident began in the dorms of the secondary school on the university’s campus. According to D.C. police, seven students -- six whites and one black -- held down a black student and wrote “KKK” and drew swastikas on his body with a marker.
A campus-wide e-mail that was sent out last week by Katherine Jankowski, dean of the center that includes the high school, said the seven students had been sent home, but university officials have not said whether the students had been disciplined further.
A university spokeswoman reached Tuesday told BlackAmericaWeb.com school officials were waiting for police to conclude their investigation before determining whether further action was warranted.
No charges have been filed against the students, who range in age from 15 to 19, and police told BlackAmericaWeb.com Tuesday the investigation was continuing.
