The San Carlos Apache Tribe's Intertribal Deaf Council (IDC) officers are hosting the 2006 National Intertribal Deaf Council Conference continues begins today and continues through Saturday, June 17, at the Apache Gold Convention Center.

Today's kickoff includes informational booths/vendors opening for attendees at noon (outside convention room hallway), followed by a welcome and posting of colors at 4:30 p.m. The first day concludes with an address by the keynote speaker at 7:30 p.m.

The conference committee consists of several San Carlos Apache members who are deaf/hard of hearing as well as hearing tribal members. San Carlos Apache Tribal members Jeremy Dillon (an ASU School for the Deaf and Blind graduate) and Evelyn Opitz (educational interpreter for the deaf) serve as chair and cochairman for the IDC conference.

This year's theme is Circle of Unity: Many Cultures Woven Together to Create One Future. IDC's mission is to bring together deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing and the late deafened natives to celebrate and share information. IDC encourages a circle of unit by recognizing that all tribes' cultures and traditions are cherished and portrayed with dignity.

IDC is believed to be the only North American Organization for the deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing and late deafened American Indian, Alaska Natives and First Nations individuals and their families.

IDC is a nonprofit organization and promotes the interest of its members by fostering and enhancing their cultural, historical and linguistic tribal traditions.

The IDC council gathers to discuss issues and to provide informational resources related to the social, educational, economic and environmental well being of its members. Nonmembers are welcome to participate as associate members.
