Murfreesboro and Rutherford County news from The Daily News Journal - www.dnj.com - Murfreesboro, Tenn.

A new office for walk-in, onsite interpreting services to help individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing is now open in Murfreesboro.

The site marks the fourth satellite office for the League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a not-for-profit agency based in Nashville. The Rutherford County office is located at the Linebaugh Public Library, Second Floor Board Room, 105 West Vine.

The office is open each Wednesday from 3:30-7:30 p.m. No appointments for interpreting services are necessary.

“Most of our clients with hearing losses need interpreting services to help them understand complex documents and official letters or placing a call to a business or doctor’s office,” said Les Hutchinson, Ph.D., League president/CEO.

“Our interpreters are fluent in American Sign Language and knowledgeable about how to assist in these particular situations.”

The satellite office is open to any person who is deaf or hard of hearing living in Rutherford County or the surrounding area. It is funded by the McWherter Fund for Basic Human Needs; the Louis Rosenfeld, M.D. Family Advised Fund; and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.

Staffing the League’s new office is Murfreesboro resident Jaclyn Kollar. She graduated from Maryville College, Maryville, in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in sign language interpreting. Kollar received a Certificate of Transliteration from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf in 2002. She has served as an educational interpreter for the Rutherford County Board of Education for nine years. In 2006, Kollar received the title of lead interpreter for the county. She is also a freelance interpreter for the League.

“Interpreting services is a signature program of our agency, and we are very excited to offer these needed services closer to home as an added convenience for residents in the Murfreesboro area and surrounding regions,” said Dr. Hutchinson.

Kollar can be reached in Murfreesboro at 615-887-0446. Onsite, walk-in interpreting services are also available at the League’s main office in Nashville from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday at 415 Fourth Avenue South. Other satellite offices are open in Clarksville on Wednesday mornings, Franklin on Thursday mornings, and Fairview on Thursday afternoons. Offsite interpreting is available by appointment by calling Eric Workman, CI, CT, 615-248-8828 (V/TTY). Emergency interpreting services are available 24/7 by calling 615-244-0979.

The League has completed a milestone 80th year as a provider of a wide range of programs and services to individuals who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The not-for-profit agency began in 1927 in Murfreesboro as a lip reading class. Today it serves Middle Tennessee and parts of Southern Kentucky.
