A TOP flute player - who also happens to be deaf - wowed university students with her music and inspirational life story.

Ruth Montgomery visited the University of Hertfordshire as part of her drive to improve musical opportunities for deaf children in schools.

The 25-year-old music teacher, who has played with the St Petersburg Philharmonic and Moscow Symphony orchestras in Russia, shared her teaching experiences with postgraduates on the Education of Deaf Children course.

She said: "Not many people out there understand how important music is to deaf children. There are many different ways it can help children to learn.

"I'm not saying all deaf children will be musical and will love music the way I do, but all children should be given the chance to learn about and experience music at school."

Yvonne Arnold, of the university's school of education, said: "Ruth was an inspiration to our students and gave them a really personal insight into how music can play an important role in teaching deaf children.
