'Mark Zuckerberg's social network is facing legal action over its use of the "like" button and other tools of the site, including the Timeline. A patent-holding company claims that Joannes Jozef Everardus Van Der Meer, a dead Dutch programmer, patented the feature in 1998.

Because Van Der Meer died in June 2004, months after Facebook's debut, his family is now defending his allegedly legacy through Rembrandt Social Media.

According to the complaint, on 1 September 1998, Van Der Meer filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a "Web page diary”, which was described as tool that with a click allows users to "collect interesting content as they browsed the Web."'
