India Deaf Festival takes-off in style @ www.punjabnewsline.com
The seventh ‘India Deaf Festival’ got underway at Baba Banda
Singh Bahadur Engineering College(BBSBEC), Fatehgarh Sahib Friday. The three-day festival being organized by Association of the Deaf, Punjab, features the National-level chess competitions in which more than 120 deaf and dumb players from 11 States of the country are participating.
The festival was inaugurated by the Vice-chairman of Punjab Planning Commission Prof. Rajinder Bhandari. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Bhandari appreciated the initiative to organize such an event for the physically challenged people. He added that the initiative is never small and the ones who take the initiative are bound to win the day. He further said that the bad fortune cannot come in the way of people with high-spirits.
He further stated that whatever the mind can dream of achieving it can manage to achieve, provided the person doesn’t loose heart. Deputy Commissioner of Fatehgarh Sahib Yashvir Mahajan in his touching address stated that these people are not deaf and dumb because of any fault of themselves but due to the nature. He added that what is worth noting here is that these people tend to smile and laugh much more than the ‘able’ people can even think of.
College Principal Dr M S Grewal said that the youth must take lessons of spirit from these physically challenged people who are endeavoring so hard to get their missions accomplished.
Dhananjay Bansal, President National Chess Association, informed that this event is featuring internationally rated players. While M K Alaguraja is rated 2118 in FIDE ratings, M Sivaraj is rated 1993 and G Spencer Alexander is rated 1836 in the FIDE ratings. All the three ranked players come from Tamilnadu. Alaguraja, two times National Deaf Champion, is a native of Madurai. He works as a casual labourer in the Non-Government office, is married and has one child. Sivaraj, one-time National Deaf Champion is a native of Nagercoil (Tamilnadu) and is working as Library Assitant Officer.
One-time National Deaf Champion Spencer is the resident of Chennai, and works as Teaching Assistant in a school for the deaf from Chennai. Speaking to the media persons, Padam Passi, President of the Association of the Deaf said that the event is a means to channelize the energy of the physically challenged people in the right direction.
