My signing is not as terrible as I thought it was and it is worth it to try and engage in conversation even if your not an experienced signer. At my nieces photoshoot, after chasing down my nephew and playing with the other kids, I came across this couple and their daughter signing. As we were waiting for the photoshoot to be over which was several hours long, my nephew was hovering around with this toy next to the guy. My lil nephew was talking to him and to avoid him feeling awkward, I signed to him that my nephew was very bored. That sparked the conversation between me and him that I wasn't really expecting. He asked me if I signed and I told him a little. He asked me where I learned I told him from watching movies, and television. I've been teaching myself to sign for years since I was in 4th grade. The fact that he understood me and I understood him was just fascinating to me. Then our conversation sparked conversation with woman he was with. In the mix of our conversation she said that she was proud that I was trying and that my signing is pretty good. I felt real good at the end when it was time to go home. She asked my name and said it was nice to meet me. All conversation that was understandable for me. Had no idea I had potential. I always doubted my signing and was never confident enough to use it, but I will definitely now.
