My name is Rebekah but please call me Ziza. I was a soldier for the U.S. Army for four years and now I am a full time College student. My degree of choice is Physical Chemistry but I am also trying to learn ASL. I was mute as a child until the age of 7 or 8 and as a result my mother placed me in an all Deaf boarding school where I attended scouts. None of the girls knew I was hearing until the day I finally spoke, which made the girls very upset and I had to be removed from the school. I haven't signed since then, so now years later, I want to return to the world I use to know. So here I am! Looking for new friends!

:welcome: to AllDeaf! I too was mute till I was five, started talking after that, but since I have an learning disability (LD), APD (functionally hard of hearing), I was stuck in the hearing world...In my early teens I began to advocate for myself and learned more about APD, now I'm in the Deaf world where I feel that I belong. I'm glad you want to embrace the world you feel most comfortable in. I'm trying to do the same. Let's help one another out! :)

:wave:Ziza
I'm hoh, was born very premature and spoke very late and had speech therapy for many years. I also have learning disabilities <diagnosed at college after I kept failing remedial college math> and un-diagnosed auditory processing problems.
Though I'm very far from fluent, ASL feel more natural to me.

Same here! I was born at 23 1/2 weeks, have APD, was mute till 5yo and also have other LDs, PDs, MDs! And I have an LD in math among other things. haha!! :)

:D Ryssie!
I count on my fingers...sometimes folks get impatient with me in line at the store. Or impatient cuz I didn't hear them or didn't process what they said.
Oh well....

Yeah, I get that a lot too! My boss always gets annoyed with me because he has an accent and I can't understand him, plus the whole slow process...I just ask him to repeat, in which he replies with a sigh...but I can't help it!

Before I had a boss who told me I needed to listen better.

I'm always saying "what?" at work.

Well, it is better to start with paper and pen for them to write them down so that you can understand what your boss said. No excuse for that, I guess. :(

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum, Ziza. Just enjoy reading and posting here. See you around here.

Thank you all for posting! I am happy to have found this site and get the chance to meet such wonderful new people. I am hearing, I just prefer to not speak...My little sister is Tone Deaf in her right ear but she prefers the hearing world even when they piss her off. Lol. I mean don't get me wrong... I love music and everything but I feel more comfortable when I don't have to actually speak. To be honest I am not sure how to explain it.

Don't worry I understand! If I didn't have to rely on talking to people so much for communication over the years, I'd probably still be mute. I don't like explaining myself verbally b/c I honestly don't really know how to...lol...I'm really glad you're having fun here! :D
