The Frederick News-Post Online - Frederick County Maryland Daily Newspaper
Ann Meehan loves houses and loves to work with people.
She recently got her real estate license and, with two of her daughters, has formed Kamela & Company. The team is part of Real Estate Teams LLCC (realestateteams.com), which is the company’s broker.
Though she can help anyone looking for a house, Meehan has a niche in the real estate field -- she is deaf.
"There are a lot of deaf people in the Frederick community," Meehan said with her daughter Jennifer Kalis interpreting.
Construction at the Maryland School for the Deaf will bring more deaf people to Frederick, Meehan said. "I will have more customers over the years."
Originally from Boston, Meehan came to the area for a daughter to attend Kendall Demonstration School in Washington and later Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick. She has three daughters.
She lived in Gaithersburg and was a founder and president of Kids of Deaf Adults.
Seven years ago, she joined Misty Minnick, a local real estate professional, who has a deaf son. Meehan did marketing for Minnick and earned her real estate license.
"Misty was my mentor. I learned a lot from her," Meehan said.
Some of her family had been in the real estate business, Meehan said, and they talked a lot about houses.
Along with Jennifer, who has had her license five years, the team includes daughter Elizabeth Kalis-McGuire. Moving down from Rochester, N.Y., Elizabeth has experience in real estate investment, having a number of properties in New York.
Jennifer graduated from Messiah College and Elizabeth from Rochester Institute of Technology.
The third daughter, Michelle Lapides, is a 2007 graduate of Maryland School for the Deaf and is a sophomore at Gallaudet University. Michelle is Miss Deaf America and will hold the title until 2010.
Meehan's husband, Louis Lapides, works for the Department of Labor in Washington and they both work part-time at the deaf video relay service in Frederick.
"It is nice to be working as a team," Meehan said. "In case one of us is out of town, there is someone to help our clients. I can't imagine working alone."
Jennifer, who is team leader, interprets for both her mother and sister. Jennifer also has her own interpreting service business.
"We all bring a lot to the table," Jennifer said.
"Even with the market slow, people have to move and I'm lucky to have lenders to work with," Meehan said.
She especially likes helping first-time buyers.
"We are getting more clients. People, especially in the deaf community, don't know where to start. They want a home, but don't know how to begin," Meehan said. "It is exciting to help them. They are so happy to have a home of their own."
The team "bridges the communication gap," Meehan said. "We have signers and interpreters. People feel comfortable with us."
Modern technology also is a key, Meehan said. "If it wasn't for the technology, I might not have gotten my license."
Elizabeth will focus on those interested in real estate investment, while Jennifer said she looks forward to working with younger clients. "It is their first time buying a home. And I would like to get into luxury homes as well."
"Having a house is like heaven. It is important, it is where you can be yourself," Meehan said.
There is a kick-off event for the new team at 7 p.m. Nov. 14. Reservations are limited to 100 guests by contacting info@KamelaAnd Company.com.
