I was told that these things repel cockroaches as well as other insects and mice and stuff. Anyone try that?

Apparently you haven't tried it yet...but those things looks like some mushy brain that's abnormal--

Although, I've never heard of it nor have I heard that it can keep away certain insects and whatnots...heck, it might keep me away!
