Hollywood Actress Speaks at Deaf Center Fundraiser | KIII TV3 | Local News

Lots of excitement at the Corpus Christi Country Club tonight as an Academy-Award winning actress, Marlee Matlin, was the keynote speaker for a special fundraising banquet tonight benefiting the local Deaf and Hard of Hearing Center.

Matlin has starred on tv shows and in movies. She's a deaf woman who has been able to overcome big odds and become a smashing success as an actress.

Matlin spoke about her life and how it began in Illinois, growing up as a deaf child. More than 300 people packed the Corpus Christi Country Club to hear her speech.

The actress spoke about winning an Oscar more than 20 years ago and starring in many different roles on tv and in the movies during her career. In the end, Matlin wouldn't say she's a hero, but she wants to lead by example and inspire others who have the same disability with hearing or being deaf.

"That's why I wanted to come here to inspire people just by example who need to hear this message and go home and remember and remember this message and use it as an inspiration in their own lives," said Matlin through a translator.

"So she represents as a role model to the deaf community someone who can achieve their dreams through hard work and wonderful talent," said Benna Timperlake, who is the executive director for the Deaf abd Hard of Hearing Center. "She's a delightful person."

Afterwards, Matlin signed autographs and spoke to many of her fans. She also answered questions and talked to many of those in attendance about how they can aspire to be best.

We're told the money raised tonight will be for those who get services from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing center. It will be use for educational and recreational programs at the center.
