DEAFNESS is a largely unseen disability despite it affecting 76,000 people in Cumbria.

William Turner is hoping to change that — particularly in Barrow — by becoming the public face of the Cumbria Deaf Association.

The deaf awareness coordinator intends to explain the effect deafness can have on people’s lives — particularly the difficulties communicating in a hearing world.

Everyday activities, such as visiting a GP, can be fraught with difficulty for deaf or hard of hearing people.

Mr Turner said: “My aim is for hearing people to be more aware when approaching a deaf or hard of hearing person.

“The good news is Barrow is starting to wake up a little bit now.

“I’ve been liaising with the town hall which is arranging to do quite a bit of deaf awareness training.

“My aim is to get the bigger stores involved.

“It’s important for doctors and dentists to be more aware of deaf or hard of hearing people.

“A lot of places don’t realise they can book an interpreter so that deaf or hard of hearing people going along on their own can access an interpreter.

“We need to polish up hearing people’s awareness so they can explain to deaf people how they can support them.”

For people interested in learning more about meeting the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people, Cumbria Deaf Association runs a number of training and accredited courses in Barrow.

Mr Turner is also willing to speak to or meet with anybody interested in knowing more about the association.

He is based in Whitehaven but travels throughout Cumbria and can be contacted on 01946 852888.
