Please forgive me if I don't use the right terms. I want to be PC and all that...
I've been partially deaf for about 4 years, and lately my daughter has been complaining about how loud the TV is when she comes over. The hearing loss is hereditary and not noise-induced.
Got my ears checked, and yup, my hearing is even worse and I have otosclerosis, too. Doctor says, "You might want to start thinking about hearing aids." Mmmmm, don't think so. $2300 that the insurance doesn't cover.
I've turned on the closed captioning on my TV, and while that's been Godsend, some of the closed captioning HAS to be being done in a foreign country, because those just aren't words that I'm reading. The commercials for the presidential candidates (Hilary, are you listening?) are the worst, followed closely by the news. I've also decided not to do business, if at all possible, with any company that doesn't provide closed-captioning on their commercials, and dang it, they'd better be real words!
I am nearly 50, newly separated from my not-so-beloved husband, have a daughter, 24, and a disabled son (high functioning autism, Tourette sydnrome, ADHD, and more), 21, and the most perfect grandson, 18 months, with a granddaughter on the way. I run my own graphic and web design business out of my home.
I've taught myself to lipread, but I'm sure I could be much better at it. I'm starting to get nervous about how much I can't hear, but loving that I can't hear as well, too, since my hearing was so hypersensitive before. Apparently I qualify for a special phone through the state, but I know nothing about the process, and I still have to function in an impatient, hearing world.
Anyway, my hearing isn't getting any better and will likely just get worse and worse, so I was hoping I could find some support and advice here.
