Hi all deaf family!!! I am a 33 year old female in Baltimore. My name is Janelle. I have taken ABR's OAE's and pure tone tests. One doctor turned me around at the door after they came back normal. He said that my hearing is normal according to the tests. He is an ENT, and they treated me very badly. I have no reason to lie....I really have problems hearing at times. They also said my audiograms were different at times too. Some days my hearing is better than others. But with my hearing aids I can hear a whole lot better. What could this be? The ENT said he doesn't think that I need hearing aids and stuff and it really makes me mad. I've done everything they said I've went to every test and I've been there. My pure tone tests show that I have a severe loss and my ABR came back normal also my OAE came back normal. Why is it that I can't hear properly? Sometimes speech isnt clear at all and I'm not sure If i should keep going to doctors what should I do. This is all new to me. It is very overwhelming at times. They also say my speech is very good. But Ive met several people just like me but I don't know their story about their speech. Please all comments are welcome and I just want this settled. I am almost losing my job. My regular audiologist well, I never get to talk to her her receptionist is very rude to me. She never listens....all this stuff could be lost in translation HELPPP! my job is important to me and so is my hearing

Hi Janelle,

Sorry they are giving you a hard time. I work at a clinic and would tell any patient to find another doctor for a 2nd or even 3rd opinion. Don't settle for a doctor who doesn't take your concerns seriously. Sometimes I think doctors get lost in their book smarts and leave their empathy at home :thumbd:

And, welcome! I have a lot of family in Ellicott City, Maryland. I'm planning a trip out for a family reunion in August. Beautiful state and the fresh crab is to die for!!

Don't feel bad..i think it's possible to have normal results in other areas and still be deaf..my CI audi that i went to see for CI candidacy is making me ha audi give me an ABR cuz she said my oae's are normal and doesn't match my audiogram blah blah blah..anyone else have a normal ABR/OAE's but are deaf? I wonder..still haven't gotten the ABR tho..too worried bout other medical things and life to go do it lol

I never had that happen before. This is interesting. everytime I get tested, there is no question about it that I am deaf. I guess it depends on the hearing loss, some are just obvious like mine. Anyway, you may have certain disease that is slowly taking away your hearing. Have a doctor to check for diseases that cause hearing loss

Well did your doctors give you hell and say your hearing was normal?
How do I fight them not in a bad way because I know something is wrong.
I work and Geico I CANNOT afford this nonsense. Didd you see different doctors?

lol...I should have done like you and not gotten an ABR but she said to proceed I needed one or treating me would be unethical. Whatever.
But thanks for your reply. and I realized an ENT was diagnosing me not an Audio! and the center. So he has no place to tell me all he is is a doctor.

Yeah sometimes its clear to tell if someone is deaf or has a hearing loss unlike the ones in the brain. So yeah I'm not sure what to do exactly and I don't think it's a disease thats taking away my hearing.

Yes you work at a clinic? what do you know about my case lol....okok
But really thanks I think I will get another opinion

Did this happen to anyone else where they passed OAES and ABRs
thanks

Sometimes people who have the results you describe have what is called "functional hearing loss."

We have at least two people that I know of here that have that diagnosis.

I was told that about functional hearing loss looking & looking on the internet is just like a fake one I'm not sure. That's harsh
