Helping deaf people make informed choices in relations

A TWO-DAY workshop on ‘Relationship and Health’ conducted for deaf people by Delhi-based The Deaf Way Foundation concluded today at Mount Carmel School, Sector 47.

Organised by the Awareness and Health Education for Adult Deaf (AHEAD) division of the foundation, the workshop aimed to create awareness about health issues with a special focus on HIV/AIDS.

Conducted by Bharat Sharma, Project Coordinator, AIDS Education, the workshop took the participants through the working of the human body to choices in relationships and to Sexually Transmitted Diseases and HIV/AIDS.

With the help of visual aids and PowerPoint presentations, Sharma, who is himself deaf, explained the various issues to the participants who belong to the Chandigarh Deaf Friendship club.

According to Sharma, there are around 1,93,600 deaf people in India who are HIV positive. These people need to receive adequate information and education so that they could make informed choices about relationships.

Some of the other key benefits of the workshop, he added, were that it would empower deaf women and girls to protect themselves and also create a safe and aware deaf community.

The Deaf Way Foundation is a voluntary organisation that provides a number of programmes for the deaf.
