Help to encourage Captioning at Youtube

Actually this could be helpful to any video site that has closed captioning ability such as google video and youtube.

I've created a youtube channel devoted to closed captioning and subtitling internet videos. It's my hope to spread the word and encourage as many people as possible to caption their videos. And also share with us (Deaf and HOH) how to watch internet videos with subtitles.

Here's a simple thing I've been doing to help encourage others to closed caption their youtube videos. And it would be great if you could do the same.

When you find a youtube video that is closed captioned. Simply post a comment to that video saying something along the lines of:

Thank you for closed captioning your video.

Not only will this show appreciation to the person who posted that video. It'll also encourage other to CC theirs as well.
 
I am going to have to subscribe to your channel. I just need clarification on this, if you don't mind: I would spend time captioning things like youtube or TED videos that don't have captions but there isn't any inexpensive way to do this, right?

People use open-source softwares like Subtitles Workshop (PC) or Subs Factory (Mac). They work quite well, I've used them before.
 
Well I downloaded subtitles workshop. Still trying to figure out how to get the youtube video up into it.
 
It would be awesome if you could caption some youtube videos.

There are free ways to closed caption videos and it's actually pretty easy to do. I'm deaf and I've even been able to caption a few of them such as music videos of songs I knew back when I could hear.

Here's a free and easy way to create Captions

Use Overstream.net. It's a site that's similar to youtube but it's based on closed captioned videos. They have a free online subtitle creator on their site that allows you to make the subtitles/captions easily. I'll also show you how to add the subtitles you create at overstream to youtube videos.

Watch these two Tutorials that walk you through how to use the Overstream.net subtitle creator:
Tutorial 1 (The Basics)
Tutorial 2 (Advanced Features)

Watch those tutorials. If it seems confusing to you at first don't worry. By the end of the tutorials I'm sure it'll all make sense and you'll be able to create the subtitles in no time. So go to overstream.net and create your account (All free). It's just like creating a youtube account so no hassles or anything.

Ok, I'll assume you've made a subtitles file at overstream. Here's how to add the subtitles to a youtube video. I created this video to walk you through the steps in adding them to youtube videos from overstream.

You might want to watch it in full screen mode or at youtube in high definition.

Ok, I think i'm over my head, lol. My original fantasy was simply to add close captions to videos I encountered (that I liked) that I thought were worth sharing. I don't make any videos as of yet.
Down the road, I may be able to figure this all out with all the info that has been provided in this thread. I haven't given up but right now it seems like it's out of reach to me.
