Speaking on behalf of children and youth with special health care needs
Families Helping Families
Hurricane Relief Fund
You can help! Donate to help families of children and youth with special health care needs hurt by Hurricane Katrina.
Have you wondered—as we have—how many of the children in states like Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama have special health care needs requiring medical care in order to survive?
The Centers for Disease Control has estimated that there are at least 99,000 children with special health care needs who live in Mississippi, 193,000 in Louisiana, 488,000 in Florida, and 152,000 in Alabama.
What challenges are their families facing under the dangerous conditions presented by Hurricane Katrina? And what can we, safe in our own homes far from the disaster, do to help?

The Family Voices Donor Campaign – Families Helping Families Relief Fund
We have heard from so many of you wanting to help. Therefore, Family Voices has begun a campaign to allow us to work with local rescue and shelter agencies to find the families whose children need special help, give them the emotional and physical support they require, and get them to resources.
Because our volunteer leaders, all of them parents or family members of children with special health care needs, are part of the Family Voices national grassroots network, we are working with state and local organizations in the communities where hurricane refugees are now being sent.
Family Voices leaders in states like Florida and Alabama, who have recently lived through hurricanes, have the tools and experience to provide technical assistance to agencies like the Red Cross and Salvation Army and direct help to hurting families.
What can you do for these children and their families?
Help provide needed assistance to these families by making a donation to Family Voices, a tax-exempt corporation. Your dollars will be directed from our national office to our volunteer leaders “on the ground” in the affected states—both those hit by the hurricane and those receiving its victims.
We promise that 100% of your donations will go to help families and their children and youth. Your donations will pay for items and services our volunteer family leaders have learned are needed—things such as anti-bacterial wipes, diapers, phone cards, medical care, cash for medications, gas and food, rent, toys, and clothing.
Our leaders will also help families negotiate the confusing maze that comes with finding temporary shelter, working with insurance companies, filling out forms, signing up for new schools. We will update our donors on our progress through the Family Voices website: www.familyvoices.org
