Hello,

I wear hearing aids in both ears and prefer to have them out when I am at home. A few months ago I had the sink running to do dishes in my apartment building and left the sink on, since I could not hear it. I know I should have remembered it, but for some reason I just didn't. Now I am being sued for damages to the two apartments below me.

Does anybody know of any legal advice that relates to deafness? Not so much a lawyer that speaks sign, but more about actual deaf law, if there is such a thing? My guess is that there is not, but I just wanted to know if anybody has had anything similar happen to them and what they may have done about it?

Thanks for looking---

Contact the state bar where you live for references. It's unlikely that you can qualify for legal aid but you can try. You can also try contracting the deaf advocacy group in your state, too. Good luck!

Sorry for the bad luck!...It's happened to me too, and a lot of other AD members, I'm sure. I wasn't sued tho'.....I lived in a townhouse, on the bottom floor.....

Don't they have renters' insurance?

DON'T play the deaf card on this. If you do that, it's going to make all deaf people look bad. This is due to your carelessness, not your deafness.

Sorry about that though. :( Perhaps there is some sort of insurance that will cover the damages?
