Help A Deaf Baby To Hear (from Enfield Independent)

A SRI LANKAN man from Enfield is urging the people of the borough to help a baby who was born with no ears following the south-east Asian tsunami of 2004.

Somaratne Wijesinghe has recently visited Sri Lanka and is now asking readers to help two-year-old baby Tharindi Supunsara, who desperately needs medical help.

Baby Tharindi comes from Matatra, in Sri Lanka, where her parents were drastically affected by the tsunami that decimated the region on Boxing Day of 2004.

Tharindi's pregnant mother was washed away by the tsunami and only narrowly managed to survive.

However, due to resulting complications with her pregnancy, Tharindi was born without ears the following June, and has severely impaired hearing.

Her parents consulted a local doctor, and after their baby underwent many tests it was found that she has bilateral external canal atresia, which means that there are holes in her ear drums.

Luckily, there is a solution to this problem - a bone-anchored hearing aid - which costs around 1.8 million Sri Lankan rupees, equivalent to £8,000.

Since Tharindi's destitute parents are unable to meet this cost, they are desperately seeking contributions from well wishers.

Anyone wishing to make a donation is kindly requested to call Somaratne Wijesinghe on 020 8440 3944.
