Hello, my name is Sara and I am graduate student at Cal State East Bay. My classmate and I are conducting a mini-study on parents' impressions of the type and amount of information on types of eduction (i.e. Deaf ed, TC, etc) that was given in audiology visits.

If you are a parent of a child with hearing loss, would you please take a couple minutes to fill this short survey out and email it to me?

My email: slpin2006@hotmail.com

The survey:

Thank you for taking the time to consider our survey. The purpose of this survey is to accumulate information regarding information supplied to parents who have recently discovered that their child has a severe or profound hearing loss. We are looking for your (the parent’s) perception of the amount and quality of information distributed.

Thanks Again – Jennifer Reynoso & Sara Anderson

Your name:

Age of your child:

How old was your child when the hearing loss was identified?

Did you feel comfortable with the type/amount of information given in that appointment (when you were told that your child had severe/profound hearing loss)?

For the following, if yes – please say how the information was disseminated (oral instruction/handouts/videos/books/websites/etc).

Did you receive information regarding Hearing Aids?

Did you receive information regarding Cochlear Implants?

Did you receive information regarding other amplification systems?

Did you receive information regarding any other medical intervention?

Did you receive information regarding oral communication?

Did you receive information regarding total communication?

Did you receive information regarding sign language?

Did you receive information regarding cued speech?

Did you receive information regarding any other language system?

Did you receive resources regarding the Deaf community?

Did you receive access to other Deaf families?

Did you receive access to other hearing parents with deaf children?

Did you receive resources/access to any Deaf schools or programs?

What other Deaf resources did you receive?

(If you feel comfortable answering) What type of education will/does your child receive (manual, oral, total, etc.)?

Please provide any other pertinent information that you believe would be beneficial in completing our research.

Up in Canada the only thing they care about is forcing the children to hear, and the families and the child are never ever ever ever told about other resources, like other HOH associations across the country where kids go camping, etc....
HOH children NEVER see what Deaf Camp is like, and it's such a loss for those kids because when they lose their hearing, they are cut off from the hearing AND the deaf.

It's usually those same parents who deny for years they need hearing aids!

I vaguely remember when I was three my parents discussing whether they should keep me or put me into foster care........................they're always been sick with worry about my life instead of knowing and believing I have a life!
And that is very typical of most parents, all the research you and people before you have done doesn't help HOH children!

thank you for your input. we're trying to promote teaching parents of ALL types of education so they can make the right decision for their family.

anyone else who has an opinion, i'd LOVE to hear it. preferably before monday.

THANKS!

How about promoting ASL and non total mainstream situtions for hoh kids? Very often parents think "Oh ASL is too "special needs" .....our child doesn't need that sort of stuff. They'll do fine in the hearing world without it."
Use the analogy of a toolbox for the different choices. Emphasise that it should not be an either or sitution, when it comes to communication tools. Parents of hoh kids need to expose them to the different choices, rather then just going with speech and the hearing world as the default.

My son was recently tested (and tested, and tested, etc) and it has proven to be a long drawn out process, but the audiologists have been very kind in providing me with ALL options available. What some of us here don't understand is that when you say "sign language" you are referring to ALL forms of sign (ASL, SEE, PSE), but that it is simply most effect for your survey to lump them all together. I am sure that in an audiological setting, more information would be given on the different types of languages available.

wow

well thank you all for your input.

that is absolutely true. in no way was the wording meant to offend. i have the utmost respect for the Deaf Culture.

the point of our mini-research assignment is to find what information is being given to parents when it is first discovered that the child has severe-profound hearing loss.

thanks again for your feedback and i apologize for creating any drama.

No apologies needed. Drama is what we thrive on lol ;)

I know what it alike when I was being left out during childhood. That's why I exposed my sons with my own language and deaf world, of course I exposed my children to hearing world, too because they are hearing that they should understand both hearing and deaf worlds. My sons understand everything what deafies sign... I have good bond retainship with my hearing sons... We understand each other like we with deafies. They do not need to ask me "pardon" or I do not need to ask them "pardon"... because we understand each other prefect . I make sure that my children should not feeling being left out when we are in deaf world. My both sons can sign to deaf children and play with them.

to find what information is being given to parents when it is first discovered that the child has severe-profound hearing loss.
First of all, why just the severe-profound population? Hoh kids are deaf too!
Maybe also do a study on WHY parents chose the method that they did. I've noticed that a lot of parents who choose oralism, do so NOT b/c they think "there's a speech window, so it's important to pursue speech first", but rather b/c they are still kind of psychologically messed up about their child's hearing loss, so choose oral-only b/c it seems more "normal" They focus on the wonderful sucess stories of kids who are mainstreamed and have little to no issues (eg social, speech).....I HAVE noticed that parents are beginning to be more open to Sign, as an option.....which is GOOD. I think that might be due to the fact that many parents of today, actually grew up with and were exposed to real live dhh kids, and so know the limitations of a pure oral methodology.

deafdyke, she is only studying severe/profound at this time. that doesnt mean that she couldnt study hoh later. she is a grad student and they have to keep their studies brief and concise.

I have a five months old granddaughter. She is hearing and does not speak at all. We can communicate together with no problem in our facial expression and body language that shows the huge evidence into a very successful ASL. ASL is the one answer that helps Deaf children from the start day one old if you mind.

Way too much about HEAR and SPEAK only.. Whats more all those aritifical languages like SEE, CUED speech, and many others that relates to the oral method that is not a true lanugage if you mind.

ASL is a true language that makes a huge difference. Most of you dont realized that many of us are using PSE which it s mixed English and ASL. Fortuntely we are using ASL without realize urself.

It was not even negative comments that I have mentioned it at all because I WILL NOT allow to keep it into the coffins and locked it anymore about a good successful d/Deaf people had done it in the past that people are trying to cover up everything about us, Deaf community, ASL and Deaf people s successful if you mind.

It came from my true experiences and other d/Deaf people s true experiences.. Thats the fact that we are trying to point that out clearly.

I want to make it work between hearing and deaf people in this society.. It is too overrated to put Deaf people with or with speech impairment down because they think we do not have a greatest mind and eyes to use. Scoffs!!

Whats more hearing and Deaf oralism people are still having a huge audist attitude toward d/Deaf people all the time that has not been change very much. So whats the use people are trying to conform us and make us function a hearing person while we are still legally deaf!!!! Thats a very dishonest to many parents who need our helps. That turns me off in a big time that it s still continually a failure toward d/Deaf people nowadays.

I do not need to hide myself and my own deafness. I like to show the whole of me and my deafness for a good reason because people need to chill out and show more respect d/Deaf people are different from you. And our hands to be use that works so well between hearing and deaf people especially the parents and d/Deaf children.

That is very disrespectful for d/Deaf babies. So be it!

Without Deaf community then you will be deadmeat for good. I m grateful to have Deaf community that saves my life with ASL. There is a reason for us stand up and believe in ourselves about being deaf and ASL.

Thats very negative to destroy our Deaf children s needs and their true identity. I didnt create those negative about deafness but YOU DID and your damn negative attitude. It s okay for them while it is not okay for me after all I was influenced a very negative approach by these people with a very negative audist attitude if u mind for many years.

Thank you!

Sweetmind
